Chamber for the Opening Block by crossing the arms with the fists at the shoulders

OB YukJang

An Opening Block in Taegeuk Yook Jang

A Low Opening Block (also called a Wedge Block, Trunk Push Low Block, or arae hecho makgi) is a block in which both arms are brought outward, low to the side, to block. It is seen in the form Taegeuk Yook Jang where it is performed slowly, to an 8-count.

Chambering: The arms are crossed with the fists at the shoulder. The thumbs should be pointed outward, away from the body. This allows the fists to "twist" as they are brought downward.

The Block: The arms are brought downward with constant power throughout the block, until they are down and out to a few inches outside the thighs. The firsts are turned as they are brought downward, so that the fists finish with the palms facing inward toward the body.

When performed slowly for Taegeuk Yook Jang, there is no "snap" at the conclusion of the block.
